A solid sterling silver heart, softly domed so it catches light across the whole curve rather than flashing at one edge. Nothing engraved, nothing set into it — the shape and the metal are the entire piece, which is why it has to be the right shape and the right metal.
This is 925 sterling silver, not plated steel. It's a different thing in the hand: heavier for its size, warmer against the skin, and the surface has a depth to it that plating can't reproduce. The gold version is vermeil — real gold over the same sterling base, not a coating over something cheaper.
It hangs from a 40cm chain with a 5cm extender. Silver is a living metal and will dull gently over time; a soft cloth brings it straight back, and unlike a plated finish, that shine is always there to recover. Silver dulls. It's supposed to. Sterling reacts slowly with the air and
darkens over time — that isn't a fault or a coating wearing off, it's what
solid silver has always done. The difference is that it comes back.
Polish it. A soft silver cloth, thirty seconds, and the shine returns
completely. Do it every few weeks and it will never get far enough to
notice.
Put it on last. After perfume, hairspray and hand cream — those speed up
tarnishing more than anything else.
Take it off before water. Swimming, bathing and washing up all accelerate
it. Chlorine especially.
Store it closed. Air is what causes tarnish, so the box it arrived in
does real work. A small sealed bag inside is better still if you won't
wear it for a while.
Worn often, silver stays bright almost on its own — the friction of
wearing it is a gentle polish. This is a piece to use, not to save.
